Home insurance, also known as hazard insurance or homeowner’s insurance, is a type of property insurance that protects your private residence.
It combines several types of coverage in one policy — including protection for your home, its contents, loss of use (additional living expenses), and liability coverage for accidents that may happen on your property or because of your actions.
Coverage A – Dwelling
Protects the structure of your home (not the land). Typically, covers replacement costs if it’s insured to at least 80% of its value.
Coverage B – Other Structures
Covers detached buildings such as garages, fences, or sheds.
Coverage C – Personal Property
Protects your belongings inside the home — furniture, clothing, electronics, and more.
Coverage D – Loss of Use / Additional Living Expenses
Pays for temporary living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable after a covered loss.
Additional Coverages
May include debris removal, fire department charges, identity theft protection, or other add-ons depending on your policy.
Exclusions
Home insurance doesn’t cover all losses. Common exclusions include earth movement, flooding, sewer or septic backup, power failure, neglect, wear and tear, war, nuclear hazard, and intentional damage. Building ordinance exclusions may limit coverage for added costs due to updated codes. Concurrent causation (when a covered and excluded peril occur together) may also be excluded. Mold or gradual damage is typically not covered if caused by long-term leaks or deterioration.
Floods
Flood damage is excluded from standard homeowners and renters policies. Separate flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private insurers. Coverage terms, limits, and waiting periods vary, so review options carefully with your agent.
Coverage E – Personal Liability
Provides coverage if you are found legally responsible for causing bodily injury or property damage to others. It also includes legal defense costs, at the insurance carrier's expense. Common claims include incidents such as dog bites or accidents on your property.
