Long-term care insurance (LTC or LTCI) is an insurance product designed to cover the cost of extended care services beyond a set period of time. It helps pay for care that is typically not covered by standard health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.
People who need long-term care are often not sick in the traditional sense, but unable to perform essential Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)—including dressing, bathing, eating, toileting, continence, transferring in or out of a bed or chair, and walking. This coverage helps protect your independence, savings, and quality of life.
Long-term care insurance can cover a wide range of services, including home care, assisted living, adult daycare, respite care, hospice care, nursing homes, and Alzheimer’s or memory care facilities. When home care coverage is included, benefits can begin on the first day they are needed, helping pay for visiting or live-in caregivers, companions, housekeepers, therapists, or private duty nurses up to seven days a week and 24 hours a day, depending on the policy’s benefit limits.
Long-term care insurance also helps reduce the emotional and financial strain often placed on family members. Many people prefer not to rely on their children for support, and having coverage can prevent personal savings from being quickly depleted by long-term care costs. Premiums for qualified long-term care insurance may even be tax-deductible, with deduction amounts tied to the insured’s age. Benefits paid from an approved long-term care contract are generally excluded from taxable income. For businesses, premium deductibility depends on business structure, and many corporations can deduct 100% of the cost when premiums are not added to the employee’s taxable income.
While Medicaid offers some long-term care benefits, it is a needs-based program and typically provides only medically necessary services. It rarely covers home-based care or assisted living, even though most individuals needing long-term care prefer to remain at home or in a private room within an assisted living facility.
